Before... The challenges of this Bethesda, MD site were its grade and its shade. The sloping site received runoff water from its neighbors on higher ground. An existing concrete patio and deck were completely surrounded by fencing allowing for no view of the wooded back yard.
...and After Time to start from scratch! The fencing and deck were removed. A clever strategy was to cut the boring rectangular patio in a dramatic diagonal and cover it with flagstone. A new drainage swale, disguised as a streambed, echoes the diagonal line of the terrace and doubles as a featured player in the view of the rear garden. Shade loving ground cover plants complete the look of this cozy hideaway.
